Tetanus, commonly known as lockjaw, is a serious bacterial infection caused by Clostridium tetani, which can be particularly dangerous in Nigeria where healthcare access may be limited. It leads to painful muscle stiffness and can be life-threatening if not treated promptly. Tetanus is preventable through vaccination and proper wound care.

Symptoms

  • Severe muscle spasms
  • Difficulty swallowing or opening the mouth

Treatment themes

  • Provide supportive care, including muscle relaxants
  • Hospitalization may be necessary; visit local hospitals such as Eko Hospital, Lagoon Hospitals, Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Reddington Hospital, or St. Nicholas Hospital Lagos and find them via our hospital locator
  • Get vaccinated with the tetanus vaccine as part of routine immunization
